Starting a vegetable garden

Q: I’m thinking of trying a backyard vegetable garden. How do I get started?

A: Small tillers that are designed for home use make gardening a much nicer project than it used to be! Labor-intensive steps like soil preparation, weeding, and end-of-season cleanup are typically much easier with a tiller. No more blisters from raking or sore backs from bending over to weed–these machines have truly revolutionized the backyard garden. Once the location is selected (at least six hours of sun per day) and the soil is prepped (garden stores sell soil test kits for about $5 to help determine what to add for optimum growing conditions), you can concentrate on the fun part–selecting vegetables to grow! Take a few swipes every couple of weeks to remove weeds, and you’ll be harvesting in no time.
