It is always a good idea to prepare for the cold season before too much snow hits the ground. When pulling out your winter weather gear, consider pulling out your winter power equipment too. It’s important to know if your snow blower is ready for winter, so perform necessary maintenance now to ensure your snow blower is ready when the snow flies!
Your Single Stage Snow Blower will be ready for anything this winter with these snow blower maintenance tips.
Before performing any repair or maintenance on your snow blower, follow these safety precautions: shut off the engine and allow it to cool, and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent your machine from starting.
Snow Blower Maintenance Tip #1 – Remove old fuel
Make sure there is no old fuel resting in your snow blower. Old fuel can cause problems for your blower’s engine, making it hard to start. If there is any old fuel dispose of it properly. The fuel can be drained by disconnecting the fuel line between the fuel tank and carburetor. The gas from the fuel tank can then be drained into a drain pan and then properly disposed of. Any residual fuel in the carburetor may be drained by removing the carburetor bowl. Inspect the bowl gasket and replace if needed.
Snow Blower Maintenance Tip #2 – Change oil the and the spark plug
There is an oil drain plug in the back of your machine. Use a wrench to remove the plug and drain the oil into a container. Disconnect the spark plug lead from the spark plug. Remove the spark plug with a spark plug socket wrench, and remove debris from around the spark plug. Examine your spark plug and check for any damage. If there is damage, consider replacing the spark plug.
Snow Blower Maintenance Tip #3 – Inspect the scraper bar
The scraper bar on your single stage blower slides against the ground to protect the housing. It’s normal for your scraper bar to endure some wear and tear throughout the years. If you notice that yours is worn, it needs to be replaced.
Snow Blower Maintenance Tip #4 – Replace rubber paddles
If you have rubber paddles, an easy way to know if they need to be replaced is to put your fingers between the rubber and the housing. If your fingers go between the two it’s more than likely time for a new set.
Snow Blower Maintenance Tip #5 – Tighten screws and bolts
Check to make sure all screws and bolts are tight. Your snow blower may vibrate a bit during operation. This can cause the screws and bolts to loosen. Tighten up those loose screws and bolts to prevent them from falling off when your snow blower is in use.
Snow Blower Maintenance Tip #6 – Check belts and cables
Check to make sure belts and cables are in good condition. If you spot any damage, replace them.
Not all single stage snow blowers are the same. Different snow blowers utilize different types of fuel, oil and screws so consult your owner’s manual before repairing your equipment.
