Winter is just starting here in the Midwest. Now is the perfect time to look into snow blower options. What kind should you buy? Electric or Gas? Single, Two or Three Stage? Let our Experts help! Keep reading to find out the key differences between snow blowers.
There are four types of snow blowers to choose from: Electric, Single Stage, Two Stage, and Three Stage.
Electric Snow Blowers
Electric Snow Blowers are lightweight and ideal for removing snow from small areas like sidewalks, decks and patios. These quiet machines are maintenance free so you don’t have to worry about oil changes. Electric Snow Blowers have several different models. You can select a power shovel, which has no wheels or chutes to direct snow but uses its auger to push the snow forward and create a clear path. Since the power shovel does not run on gas you’ll need an extension cord to operate the machine.
Other Electric Snow Blower models are equipped with wheels and a discharge chute. The wheels allow you to easily move the machine without exerting as much energy as pushing the power shovel. These snow blowers do more than move snow forward; their augers cut through snow and send it up and out of the machine’s chute.
Single Stage Snow Blowers
Single Stage Snow Blowers are great for everyday home use on small and smooth, paved surfaces. These lightweight, easy-to-maneuver blowers are perfect for light snowfall. With powerful and efficient augers that clean right to the pavement, Single Stage Snow Blowers scoop and discharge piles of snow quickly. These machines work well on small areas but they work well on mid-sized driveways and are able to tackle parking lots, making them ideal for both homeowners and professionals.
Single Stage Snow Blowers come in a variety of makes and models, but they’re all equipped with more powerful engines than electric blowers and chutes that help you remove snow faster. These blowers clean right to the pavement, meaning their augers touch the ground. Avoid using them on gravel surfaces as they collect everything, including rocks, and throw it to the side.
Two Stage Snow Blowers
Two Stage Snow Blowers are clear much wider paths and work best on concrete, asphalt and mid-sized driveways. Their augers collect snow in the first stage and a high-impeller throws it out of the discharge chute to complete the second stage. These blowers are larger and more powerful than electric and single stage models. They’re equipped with bigger and stronger augers that chop up and take in snow and ice at a high rate of speed while their discharge chutes move larger amounts of snow greater distances.
Two Stage Snow Blowers are self-propelled, removing deep amounts of snow with superb maneuverability. Since these machines move snow and ice accumulation with ease they’re perfect for clearing everything from residential walkways to public municipals and business areas.
Three Stage Snow Blowers
Three Stage Snow Blowers are the most efficient and powerful snow blower option. Ideal for gravel driveways and larger paved areas, these large units easily remove piles of snow faster than any other blower. Powerful steel augers take in snow in the first stage and then quickly move it through the machine for the accelerator to chop and push it to the impeller in the second stage. The third stage is completed when the snow blower throws the snow up and away from the ground.
Three Stage Snow Blowers are designed with two heavy-duty augers that break up snow, ice and slush while clearing wide paths. They move up to fifty percent more snow two times faster than a two stage blower, meaning less snow is left behind.
These snow blowers are equipped with a wide range of innovative features. Some machines allow you to change the direction of the discharge chute to place snow where you want. Models with speed control feature multiple forward and reverse speeds. While gloves typically get the job done, some snow blowers are designed with heated handles to keep your hands warm regardless of the snow and windy weather. Snow blowers with headlights are convenient, allowing you to take care of snow any time of the day. Again, each snow blower is different so it’s just a matter of choosing the one that fits your personal needs.
