Buyer’s Guide to Chipper Shredder Vacs

Maintaining a neat looking yard can be difficult, but if you have the right equipment in your arsenal the task becomes less challenging. When you’re stuck with unwanted leaves, branches, and other debris, chipper shredder vacs come in handy. There are multiple aspects to consider when buying chipper shredder vacs and this guide will help simplify the buying process.

Vacuums are available in push or self-propelled models. With push vacuums, you would need to physically push the machine while self propelled models have a drive system to pull the machine for you.

If you’re looking for a push vacuum, it’s important to purchase a machine with larger diameter wheels because these wheels will make the machine easier to push, especially over rougher terrain. It will also help to support the weight of the bag as it starts filling with debris.

Self propelled models are more popular for lawn applications. The added weight of the bag makes the job easier for you. A push vacuum, on the other hand, is oftentimes used for parking lot cleaning. A push machine is very adequate for smoother surfaces.

When looking for a vacuum to purchase, you may want to consider that optional hose kits are available. With the hose kit, you can shut off the front snout and direct all the vacuum action into the hose, and then use it to get around shrub beds and other areas you can’t reach with the standard vacuum snout.

There are also shredder vac options that allow you to easily adjust your snout opening. If you work with heavier debris, you want to open that snout up to allow the heavier debris in. if you want to create more vacuum action for better cleaning, maybe on a flush surface, you can lower the snout down and it creates more vacuum action and better clean up on the lighter use.

Many vacuums have a chipper option. With chippers, you can feed your limbs down into the machine and then use the vacuum for picking up the leaves and other debris.

With your typical vacuum system, as the debris runs through the impeller, you’ll get an approximate 4 to 1 reduction, meaning you’ll fit more in the bag than you would if you were just bagging the material manually. Note, you’ll get an approximate 4 to 1 reduction depending on the material you want to remove.

Chipper shredder vacs are dedicated machines designed for chipping and shredding. The key advantage with these machines is you’ll get a much better reduction, typically a 10-12 to 1 reduction in debris. Chipper shredder vacs have a series of swinging knives down in the hopper that will shred the debris versus just running it through the vacuum and impeller.

With the chipping option, the typical size limbs these machines will handle are 2 to 3 inch depending on the machine.

Chippers are equipped with different horse power. If you have a lot of debris, especially a lot of heavy chipping, you’re going to want something with a large engine because it does require more horse power, especially with a chipping application.

A nice feature on the larger units is a tow bar. You can attach these very easily and hook it to your lawn tractor or utility vehicle for easy travel.

On some of the heavy duty machines, you’ll notice they have a much larger opening and will handle limbs more effectively. They also have a larger diameter impeller and will have up to 30 pounds worth of weight in the impeller. The additional weight will help the momentum for heavier chipping. You may want to look for something with a nice, wide opening for feeding your leaves and other debris.

Shredders have different screens available. If you want smaller mulch for your beds, for example, or if you have a lot of wet debris to remove you can choose a shredder with a smaller or larger opening to help complete your task.

Chipper shredder vacs are 3-in-1 machines that are perfect for cleaning and compacting yard debris. These versatile chipper shredder vacs allows you to cover both wide patches of ground and smaller, hard-to-reach areas. They also simplify clean-up, condensing more material without frequent disposal breaks to make your workday go by more quickly.

To handle your fall tasks, find the chipper shredder vacs that will work best for your yard.
