Synthetic turf is a grass-like ground cover that mimics natural grass in appearance and function. We know that it’s used on athletic fields to provide a year-round playing surface that tolerates extended use without hours of downtime. The synthetic turf industry is becoming more popular among homeowners as well because it’s a low maintenance surface. Synthetic turf is aesthetically pleasing, does not need to be watered or fertilized, and does not develop weeds. While synthetic turf may seem like a solution to yard care, getting rid of your authentic yard is not the best strategy.
Your yard is about more than good looks. Your yard serves a variety of purposes for the environment and health of you and your family. Grass is an oxygen producer and carbon sink – a natural system that traps greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Grass removes approximately six tons of carbon dioxide per acre, per year from the atmosphere so without grass, the carbon sequestration process won’t occur. Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing carbon dioxide and depositing it where it will not enter the atmosphere. The goal is to prevent the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to reduce global warming.
Grass also helps capture dust, smoke and other pollutants that harm humans. Without grass, these pollutants remain in the air we breathe. Large areas of grass also reduce storm water runoff. The grass slows down and absorbs runoff, and cleanses water of impurities.
Turfgrass helps resolve a variety of environmental issues as well. Turfgrass terminates the heat island effect, which describes areas that are significantly warmer than the surrounding rural areas due to human activities. Lawns can be 31 degrees cooler than asphalt and 20 degrees cooler than soil, but without grass and other plants to reduce the heat island effect, areas will get hotter.
Turfgrass also prevents soil erosion. Turfgrass holds soil in place, but without grass more soil washes into the water. This reduces the amount of sunlight that can penetrate the water. Nutrients and chemicals carried with the soil cause large algae blooms, which steals oxygen from the water and kill fish.
Additionally, yards and turfgrass offer places for children and pets to play. Studies have shown how green space improves our health, fitness levels, and mood. Grass and other plant life provide food and habitats for small mammals. Without grass, food sources for birds and small mammals will vanish. If we eliminate grass from our yards, wildlife loses their habitat and food source.
