Regularly change the oil in your John Deere tractor because it is critical to the life of the engine. Before performing any maintenance on your John Deere tractor, refer to your owner’s manual for recommended maintenance and safety information. Maintenance instructions vary by model, so depending on your riding lawn mower model our instructions may vary slightly. Check your owner’s manual to get instructions specific to your model, including information about the recommended oil type.
To change the oil in your John Deere tractor you’ll need a drain pan, siphon pump, new oil, and a rag.
Begin by parking your mower on a flat, level surface. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool, remove the ignition key, and disconnect the spark plug ignition wire to prevent accidental starting.
Use your rag to clean the mower’s oil fill and drain area. Remove the dip stick from the oil fill tube and use a siphon pump or drain plug to remove old oil.
If your Deere has an old oil filter, replace it with a new one. Use your lawn mower oil to lubricate the gasket of the new filter and then install the filter.
Once the old oil has been removed the old oil from your lawn mower, pour the new oil into the mower. Replace the dip stick and use the dip stick to check the oil level. Depending on where it reads, add more oil if necessary. Lastly, reconnect the spark plug wire and start your mower.
