We hear the question every so often -what is a good size snow blower? – and there’s no right answer. It all depends on you and your needs.
More specifically, the ideal snow blower size depends on the surface area and expected winter conditions of your driveway or the area you want to clear. Your snow blower decision also depends on the type of snowfall you receive annually.
Small driveways are easy enough to clear with smaller snow blowers with a clearing width as little as 21”, but owners of longer driveways (longer than 60 feet) should consider a blower with a larger clearing width.
If the area you want to clear receives light snowfall of up to 6”, a single-stage snow blower is an adequate choice.
A two-stage snow blower is ideal for moderate snowfalls of up to 12,” but a three-stage snow blower comes in handy if you struggle to remove snow because of heavy snowfall (from 18-23”) or if you frequently have wet and icy snow.
Having trouble deciding which snow blower is best for you? Understandably so. A snow blower is a major purchase. Choosing between the different models can be a challenging task, however focusing on your environment needs is the best way to start.
To help with your buying decision, ask yourself the following.
What’s the most snow you usually receive in a storm?
How would you describe the snow you receive? Light & Powdery, Moderate, Heavy & Wet?
What surfaces will you be using your snow blower on? Smooth Pavement / Asphalt, Uneven Pavement / Asphalt, Stone / Gravel / Dirt?
Is the surface sloped? Flat, slight slope, steep slope?
Does your property have any of the following obstacles? Curving paths, areas where snow drifts, barriers of snow left at the end of the driveway, or narrow Spaces?
How much area are you using the snow blower on? 1– 8 parking spaces, 8 – 15 parking spaces, 15+ parking spaces?
Are there any features that are important to you? Example: EFI engine, Heated Hand Grips, LED Light Bar, Track Drive
