How to Change the Spark Plugs on a Toro Zero Turn

Is your Toro zero turn rider is having trouble starting? If so, there’s a chance that the spark plugs are the issue. Spark plugs that are in good condition will ensure that your mower has less trouble starting. We suggest changing your spark plugs every spring. Here’s how to change the spark plugs on a Toro zero turn rider.

Before performing any maintenance on your Toro zero turn rider, refer to your owner’s manual for recommended maintenance and safety information. Maintenance instructions vary by model, so depending on the model of your zero turn, our instructions may vary slightly. Check your owner’s manual to get instructions specific to your model.

Park your mower on a flat, level surface. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool. Remove the ignition key and disconnect the spark plug ignition wire to prevent accidental starting. Engage the parking brake.

What you’ll need:

  • Replacement spark plugs
  • 13/16 in socket
  • Ratchet

Pull the spark plug boot out of the way, loosen up the spark plug, and change it out for the new one. For these spark plugs, Toro recommends 0.28 of a gap in between the spark plug electrode and the top.

Thread the spark plug in by hand. Use the ratchet to tighten it down until snug, then give it a quarter turn more to give it proper torque. Reinstall the spark plug boot replace the spark plug o the other side.

Same thing on the other side. Pull the spark plug boot off, push it to the side, and take the spark plug out. Change out the spark plug, make sure it’s properly gapped and thread it back in by hand. Tighten it down until tight and give it a quarter turn more.

Reinstall the spark plug boot and test for operation.
