Facts About Our Backyard Nemesis

This is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the outdoors. We have almost 16 hours of daylight to enjoy all of our outdoor activities and nothing feels better than ending the day with a backyard party/barbecue and some cool refreshments. But there is one part of summer that can put a damper on all of that, the scourge of the abominable mosquitoes.

Some summers feel worse than others because of these biting bloodsuckers, and the warm, damp weather would probably be the best explanation for that. While we all try to find ways to avoid or eradicate these pests, we thought we’d give you some fast facts about our not-so-friendly backyard roommates.

  • Mosquitoes use a combination of infrared vision and smell to zero in on their prey and can start to smell you up to 100 feet away.
  • Only female mosquitoes bite – they need the blood to develop their eggs.
  • If it seems like they multiply unbelievably quickly, it’s because they do. Female mosquitoes lay 100 to 300 eggs at a time (up to 3,000 in a lifetime!) and develop from egg to adult in as little as 4 days.
  • They stay local – most mosquitoes never travel more than a mile from where they were born.
  • Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water and that is where they develop until they are adults. Even small amounts of standing water can be enough to develop hundreds of eggs. If possible, eliminating these breeding spots around your property is probably the best defense against mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito biting activity increases up to 500 times when there is a full moon.
  • Some studies show that mosquitoes prefer children to adults, so if it seems like your kids are getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, it’s probably true.
  • Mosquitoes have been in existence for millions of years, so we’re probably stuck with them.
