Whether you own few or many acres, who doesn’t want a professional looking lawn? While it may seem hard and expensive to achieve, crafting a lawn that will be the envy of the neighborhood could be easier than you think. Check out these tips on how to improve the look of your lawn.
Tip 1 – Mow More, Cut Less
Trimming less from the grass and mowing it more often will prevent your lawn from growing long and appearing overgrown. Nothing looks less professional than a lawn that’s overgrown and weed infested.
Be careful when you mow. Even sharp blades can tear long grass, especially if you don’t adjust the mower height properly. Remember, never mow more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
Tip 2 – Edge After You Mow
A good edger will help add a professional-looking touch to your lawn in no time. Use an edger along your driveway, patio, or sidewalk for manicured borders that frame your yard perfectly.
Many pros typically use a string trimmer with the guard removed to edge along fences, sidewalks, etc. Whether you use an edger or trimmer, make sure you take the time to edge and help your lawn stand out.
Tip 3 – Keep Mower Blades Sharp
If your mower’s blades are dull, it doesn’t matter how powerful or technologically advanced it is. Dull blades, as you may know, tear grass and result in uneven, ragged edges, rather than clean cuts.
Your lawn mower blades should be sharpened about every 20 to 25 hours. For most homeowners, that’s about once or twice a year. Make sharpening blades part of your spring mower maintenance. This is a great way to continuously maintain a professional looking lawn.
Tip 4 -Look Out for Weeds
Spot and treat weeds early to prevent them from spreading. Spray weeds like dandelions and clover before they flower and go to seed. Digging weeds out of your lawn is a great solution. Fertilizer and frequent mowing at a high cutting height are also ideal. Using good quality seeds is a way to prevent the growth of weeds.
Tip 5 – Show Your Stripes
Over time, using the same starting points and path to mow your lawn will create wear patterns and can create ruts and uneven spots that cause scalping. Change mowing starting points and the path you mow to keep a nice looking lawn.
Lastly, nothing makes a lawn stand out quite like lawn stripes or patterns. Professional landscapers have mastered this. Try adding a striping kit to your mower to make stripes stand out and accentuate patterns.
With the striping kit, begin mowing at one side of your yard and mow in a straight line to the other side. Turn the mower around, be careful to line up your wheels with the previous line, then mow another straight line in the direction you originally came from. Repeat this lawn striping process until your yard is completely mowed. Remember not to mow your grass too short (keep the length at about three inches).
Following these professional lawn tips will go a long way in keeping your lawn green and healthy all summer long.
