How to Change the Oil in a Lawn Mower

Changing the lawn mower oil is crucial for several reasons. First, regular oil changes help maintain the engine’s performance and extend its lifespan. As the lawn mower operates, the oil lubricates the engine’s moving parts, reducing friction, and preventing excessive wear. Over time, the oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dirt, debris, and combustion by-products, which can hinder its lubricating properties.

By changing the oil, you remove the accumulated debris and ensure the engine continues to run smoothly, reducing the risk of costly repairs and breakdowns. Fresh, clean oil also aids in dissipating heat from the engine, preventing it from overheating and potentially causing irreversible damage.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you change the oil on your lawn mower.

Before performing any maintenance on your lawn mower, refer to your owner’s manual for recommended maintenance and safety information. Maintenance instructions vary by model, so depending on the model of your mower, our instructions may vary slightly. Check your owner’s manual to get instructions specific to your model.

Park your mower on a flat, level surface. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool. Remove the ignition key and disconnect the spark plug ignition wire to prevent accidental starting. Engage the parking brake.

What you’ll need:

  • Fresh engine oil (Check your manual for the recommended type and quantity)
  • Drain pan or container to catch the old oil
  • Socket wrench or box wrench
  • Funnel
  • Old towels or rags

Locate the Oil Drain Plug – Locate the oil drain plug on the underside of the lawn mower’s engine. It is usually a bolt or square-shaped plug.

Prepare the Drain Pan – Place the drain pan or container underneath the oil drain plug to catch the old oil. Make sure it’s large enough to hold all the oil that will come out.

Drain the Old Oil – Carefully loosen and remove the oil drain plug using the appropriate wrench. Allow the old oil to drain completely into the drain pan.

Replace the Oil Filter (if applicable) – Some lawn mowers have an oil filter that needs to be replaced during an oil change. If your mower has one, refer to the manual for the correct filter replacement procedure.

Dispose of the Old Oil – Properly dispose of the old oil at a local recycling center or an auto parts store that accepts used oil.

Reinstall the Drain Plug – Clean the drain plug, if necessary, and then reinstall it securely.

Add New Oil – Using a funnel to avoid spills, pour the recommended amount and type of new engine oil into the oil fill tube. Refer to your owner’s manual for the correct oil type and capacity.

Check the Oil Level – After adding the new oil, allow a few moments for it to settle, then check the oil level using the dipstick or sight glass (whichever your lawn mower has). Adjust the oil level if needed.

Clean Up – Clean up any spilled oil and ensure the oil fill cap is securely tightened.

Dispose of the Oil Properly – Remember to dispose of the used oil responsibly by taking it to a recycling center or appropriate drop-off location.

Changing the lawn mower oil at recommended intervals is vital for engine health, performance, and longevity, while also contributing to environmental sustainability. It is a relatively simple yet effective maintenance task that should not be overlooked.
