Over time, the wheels on your walk behind lawn mower can become worn out or damaged. This can reduce the traction and alignment of your mower. Luckily, replacing the caster wheel is an easy task so follow on experts’ instructions to get the job done in no time.
Before performing any maintenance on your lawn mower, refer to your owner’s manual for maintenance instructions and safety information. Maintenance instructions vary by model, so depending on your lawn mower model our instructions may vary slightly.
Before changing the caster wheels on your lawn mower, please abide by these safety precautions:
- Shut off the engine
- Allow the engine to become cool to the touch
- Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting
To carry out this task, you’ll need these tools:
- Piece of wood
- New caster wheel
To change the front wheels on a Cub Cadet lawn mower, place the piece of wood underneath the front of the mower to prop it up. There are caster wheels on the front of the mower, and there is a wing nut on the caster wheels that allow you to remove the wheel and adjust the height.
To remove the caster wheel, turn the wing nut to the left and remove the bolt. Allow the wheel to drop out at the bottom. Remember which setting the wheel was at, if that’s where you want your machine to mow at when you put the caster wheel back on.
Take your new caster wheel, place it back in and replace the nut and bolt.
To replace the bolt, there is a shoulder on the bolt. Place that on the side with the square holes. If you marked or remembered which hole you wanted the machine height to be on, raise the wheel to that height and press the bolt through. Make sure you line up the carriage bolt with the square holes in the actual arm.
Replace your wing nut and make sure it’s tight. Remove the piece of wood from underneath the mower and replace the spark plug ignition wire.
If you’d like, bring your lawn mower to one of our expert technicians and they will change the caster wheel for you.
