Fuel. Let’s talk about it.
We know all the different power equipment requires fuel. We get a lot of questions asked surrounding fuel. For example – do we need rec fuel, you know, ethanol free fuel? We don’t want to say you need rec fuel. Your manufacturers will all recommend 10% ethanol or less. Wreck fuel is ethanol free so naturally that is going to be the best, but it is very expensive and a lot of times you have to go out of your way to find it.
The key with fuel is 10% ethanol or less. Typically, if you go to a mid-grade fuel, you go from 87 to 89 octane. There is less ethanol in the mid-grade fuel.
We recommend you go to a premium fuel. It’s not much more money to go to 93 octane. You don’t have to worry about issues as your fuel degrades. Premium fuel holds that octane to keep it above that 89, 90.
We also have a lot of people who go into the pre-mix fuel. One advantage of the pre-mix fuel for your two cycle products, you don’t use a lot of fuel and a lot of times it sits long time between uses.
Manufacturers have all come out with ethanol free fuel and it has fuel stabilizers added to it which would give you up to a two-year shelf life. If you’re not using your equipment a lot this is a great way to go at any time, but it is more costly than going to your fuel station, mixing up your own fuel.
All your manufacturers will have 93 octane, it’s kind of standard. RedMax has got a 95 octane. Any one of those is plenty high octane. Also, companies like VP Fuel have four-cycle in pre-packaged containers. If you are not using your power equipment a lot, these are a great way to go.
Another great option we recommend, whenever you get fuel, add some type of fuel stabilizer. A lot of problems we see is people with fuel that’s been sitting for a few months so just add a little bit of stabilizer to your fuel, it doesn’t take a lot.
There are different kinds of stabilizers out there for you to choose from. Exmark mower manufacturer has a great additive. Sea Foam is a fuel treatment system, you’ll see this in a lot of auto parts stores. It doesn’t take a lot to use, about a gallon or two gallons of fuel when you’re picking it up but that little bit will help give you a longer shelf life. You’ll get up to 12 months storage just by adding stabilizers.
We highly recommend premium fuel, a little bit of stabilizer and have a gas can because a good, clean gas can is extremely important.
