Get the most out of your snow blower while removing snow from your driveway quickly and easily by following these expert tips.
Before operating your snow blower, make sure the area is clear of people, kids, and pets. Clear objects that might be under the snow. Do not wear loose fitting clothes, such as scarfs or bulky jackets, that may get caught in the machine. Turn off the snow blower when stepping away for more than a few seconds. Please refer to your snow blower owner’s manual for all safety instructions.
- Do not wait for snow to stop.
Keep up with the snowfall. Most of the time, it is easier and faster to clear 6 inches of snow twice than 12 inches of snow once
- Don’t fight the wind.
Whenever possible, point the snow blower chute downwind so that the wind helps you blow the snow. If there’s little or no wind, first cut a path down the center of the driveway and then work in “circles” so that you can keep the chute throwing to one side. This pattern allows you to always throw snow to the right and reduces the need to change the direction of the chute.
- Don’t snow blow perpendicularly.
When removing snow, it’s usually best to travel up and down the length of a driveway with the snow blower, not perpendicular.
- Throw snow as far into the yard as possible.
Throwing snow only to the edge of a driveway or walkway will lead to high snowbanks and will make it more difficult to remove snow during the next snowstorm.
- Never use a hand or foot to clear clogged snow from the machine.
Turn the snow blower off, wait a few seconds and then use the chute clean-out tool or a broom handle to remove the clog.
Don’t let the snow slow you down. Incorporate these quick tips to make clearing snow quicker and easier than before.
