How To Wind a Trimmer Head: Step-by-Step Guide

A string trimmer (also known as a weed wacker or line trimmer) is a must-have tool for keeping your lawn clean, tidy, and edged. Whether you’re trimming around trees, fences, or hard-to-reach areas your mower can’t access, you’ll eventually need to reload the trimmer line. Knowing how to wind a trimmer head properly saves time and keeps your equipment running smoothly.

When Should You Rewind Your Trimmer Head?

If your trimmer isn’t cutting efficiently or the line breaks off too short, it’s likely time to rewind. Some trimmer heads auto-feed or bump-feed the line, while others require manual winding.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Replacement trimmer line (check your manual for correct size and type)
  • Scissors or line cutter
  • Gloves (optional)

Before you begin:

  • Turn off the trimmer and disconnect the power source (unplug or remove the battery/spark plug).
  • Let it cool completely and clean the trimmer head of any grass buildup or debris.

Basic Steps to Wind Most Trimmer Heads

1. Remove the Spool Cover
Most trimmer heads have tabs or screws that hold the cover in place. Press the tabs or unscrew the cap to expose the spool inside.

2. Take Out the Spool
Gently pull out the spool. Be mindful of any springs or small parts inside the housing.

3. Cut the Right Length of Trimmer Line
Depending on your model, you’ll need around 10 to 25 feet of trimmer line. If the head supports dual lines, cut two equal lengths.

4. Insert the Line into the Spool
Find the line starter holes or slots in the spool. Insert about ½ inch of line into the hole and begin winding in the direction of the arrows (usually marked on the spool). Keep the line tight and even.

For dual-line spools, wind one piece of line on each side.

Leave 4–6 inches unwound at the end and insert the tips into the holding notches.

5. Reinstall the Spool
Place the wound spool back into the trimmer head, making sure the line ends feed through the eyelets or holes in the trimmer housing.

6. Secure the Cover
Snap or screw the cover back into place. Tug lightly on the lines to ensure they move freely.

Quick Tips
Never use wire or metal substitutes — only use approved trimmer line.

Trim the line if it’s longer than the trimming blade allows (usually marked on the guard).

Wind the line evenly and avoid crossing to prevent jamming.

What About Bump-Feed or Easy-Load Heads?
Some newer models feature bump-feed heads or easy-load designs that allow you to wind line without disassembly. For these:

  • Align arrows on the trimmer head
  • Insert line through both eyelets at once
  • Turn the spool knob to automatically wind the line inside
  • Check your trimmer manual for specific instructions.

Winding your trimmer head might seem tricky the first time, but once you’ve done it a few times, it’s quick and easy. Regularly replacing the line ensures better performance and a cleaner yard.
