Replace a Toro Walk Behind Lawn Mower Wheel – Using Toro Parts Wheel Gear Assembly 115-4695

Summer is in full swing, and with it comes persistent warm weather and brief rain showers. This water and sunshine play a large role in the speed at which your grass grows. Your lawn mower is beginning to see more and more of the outdoors after being stored away for the winter. Before you’re able to give your lawn the perfect trim, your mower should be in near-perfect condition.

When mowing with walk behind lawn mowers, be aware of their condition. At times, it’s easy to focus on what many perceive as big issues, from changing engine oil to changing the spark plugs. However, there are issues that don’t seem as intimidating or crucial, making them easy to neglect, but they’re just as important. Things such as replacing the rear wheel(s) on your walk behind lawn mower is important, and replacing the wheel yourself takes less time than you think. In a few minutes you’ll be mowing again, leaving plenty of time to get through the rest of your to-do list. Here’s how to replace a Toro walk behind lawn mower wheel, using Toro Parts Wheel Gear Assembly 115-4695.

Before performing any repair or maintenance on your Toro walk behind lawn mower wheel, please follow these safety precautions: shut off the walk behind lawn mower engine and allow it to cool, disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.

To carry out this task, you’ll need these tools: Toro Parts Wheel Gear Assembly 115-4695, 13 millimeter socket, Ratchet, and a piece of 2×4 wood.

To replace your Toro walk behind lawn mower wheel, place the 2×4 piece of wood under the rear deck of your lawn mower to raise the wheel off the ground.

Remove the wheel using the 13 millimeter socket and ratchet. When removing the wheel cover backer, there is a small washer that you will need when reinstalling the wheel; it fits right back into the cover. Try your best to keep this washer in your possession; however, if you misplace it, we have plenty in stock. The washer is a Toro Parts Washer Stepped 614426; you can purchase another one from our store or online.

After the wheel cover is removed, inspect it for any type of dirt and debris that might be caught in the wheel. Check the wheel teeth for any uneven wear or broken teeth. The mower contains a drive gear that is attached to the transmission to drive the wheel. If there are broken teeth, you’ll likely need to replace the drive gear with a new Toro Parts Pinion 110-9417.

Clean the bolt of any debris, then reinsert in the wheel. Reinstall the small washer and backing plate. When you put the backing plate on, there is a hole for the drive gear. Reinsert the drive gear, and put the wheel back on.

When reinstalling the bolt, do so by hand. If you use any type of tools you run the risk of stripping out the bolt or the adapter that it’s bolted to. Simply put the wheel on finger tight, and use the ratchet to make it tight and finish the job.

Lastly, give the wheel a quarter turn to make sure it’s tight. Check the wheel to make sure it rolls freely and that you don’t have anything lose or binding.
