How to Replace a Toro Walk Behind Lawn Mower Blade

Replace a Toro Walk Behind Lawn Mower Blade – Using Toro Parts Blade 131-4547-03

There are a number of different walk behind lawn mowers, but every mower has one thing in common: their essential function is to cut your grass. The blade underneath your mower achieves that goal and should be cared for as much as the mower itself. A tip to make you aware of and maintain your mower blade’s condition is to observe your lawn. When mowing check your lawn for unevenness; a sharp lawn mower blade cuts your grass at an even height with one pass of the mower. Dull blades trim grass unevenly and leave the tips of your grass torn and not cleanly-sliced. A sharp blade eliminates many lawn issues. If you learn to be more mindful of your lawn, you will become more mindful of your mower blade’s ability to effectively cut the lawn. Click here to view the signs that it’s time to replace your lawn mower blade.

The experts are here to help. Follow this guide and you’ll be back behind your Toro walk behind lawn mower in a few minutes. Here’s how to replace a Toro walk behind lawn mower blade, using Toro parts blade 131-4547-03.

Before replacing or repairing anything on your mower, please follow these safety precautions: shut off the lawn mower engine and allow it to cool, disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting and tuck it out of the way so the wire doesn’t make contact with the spark plug.

To carry out this task, you’ll need these tools: Toro Parts Blade 131-4547-03, breaker bar, torque wrench, scraper, 16 millimeter socket, and a piece of wood.

To replace a Toro walk behind lawn mower blade, using Toro parts blade 131-4547-03, tip the mower over but keep the air filter side up to prevent the oil from going into the air filter and carburetor , which will prevent the mower from running when you tip it back over.

To remove the bolt off the bottom of the blade, wedge your block of wood between the mowing deck and the blade itself to stop the mowing blade while you loosen and remove the bolt. Once the block is firmly in position, connect your breaker bar and 16 mm socket; place them on the bolt and twist to loosen.

Remove the block of wood once the bolt begins to loosen. Set aside your breaker bar and socket, and use your hand to continue twisting the bolt loose. When you’re able to remove the bolt, inspect it for any type of galling and to ensure that the bolt hasn’t been stripped out. If your bolt is worn or damaged, you’ll need to purchase a new Toro Washer-Stepped 614426 before putting it back on the mower.

Now that the bolt has been removed, you may remove the blade adapter and the blade itself from the mower. Before installing the new blade use your scraper to scrape out any type of debris from the mowing deck that can cause the mower not to recycle correctly. Once the deck is cleared, you may install the new lawn mower blade.

Before inserting the blade make sure the wing side of the blade is up towards the mowing deck because that’s what gives the blade its lift to lift the grass. Reinstall the blade adapter and bolt. Place the blade, adapter and bolt on the mower, and use your hand to tighten the bolt. Using any tools will cause the bolt to strip out or cross thread. Reinstall the bolt finger tight and prepare to use your torque wrench to torque the blade back down.

Lastly, place the block of wood between the blade and mowing deck again, to block the blade so you’re able to torque it down. On this mower, Toro recommends 60 foot pounds to properly torque down the blade bolt so make sure your torque wrench is set to 60 ft pounds. Torque down the bolt until the torque wrench clicks; the wrench should click at 60 ft pounds.

Remove the block of wood, and tip your Toro walk behind lawn mower back on its wheels. Reinstall the spark plug wire, then start the mower and check for proper operation.

There will come a time when you will need to replace the blade on your Toro walk behind lawn mower. At that time, with the help of this guide, you’ll know exactly what to do and be able to avoid going days without your lawn mower.
