John Deere lawn mowers<\/a> have been around for over 50 years. Hundreds of new models<\/a> have been introduced to homeowners and landscape professionals throughout the years, and these innovative models have played a vast role in the advancement of John Deere<\/a> mowers today.<\/p>\n

1960s:\u00a0The History of John Deere Lawn Mowers<\/h3>\n

It all began in 1963 when John Deere<\/a> entered the lawn tractor market. This year they introduced the model 110<\/a>, which featured a 4-stroke petrol-fueled engine with 7 horsepower. Its ergonomic design and futuristic features made the 110 a success.<\/p>\n

Lawn mowing was becoming a more popular leisure activity during the 1960s. This prompted John Deere to offer more lawn mower models<\/a> with similar features and implements that the farming tractors integrated.<\/p>\n

With the success of the 100 lawn mower<\/a>, John Deere introduced the 60 model<\/a> shortly after. This mower was designed for operators in urban areas who had less land to manage. The 60 model<\/a> offered a variety of attachments, making it a versatile machine for its time. The attachments included a pull behind sprayer, model 80 dump cart, snow blade, and snow thrower.<\/p>\n

Building off of the success of the 110, John Deere introduced the 112 and 140 model<\/a>. The 112 was a larger model that carried a similar style as the 110 but with a bigger motor and wider deck. The 112 was designed for those who needed a machine for larger jobs than the 110 and 60 were capable of. The 140 was known for having a lot of power for such a small machine. Designed with a 14 hp Kohler engine and hydrostatic transmission the 140 was ahead of its time and able to accomplish a variety of yard tasks.<\/p>\n

1970s:\u00a0The History of John Deere Lawn Mowers<\/h3>\n

A few existing models <\/a>that were introduced in the 1960s were upgraded in the early 1970s, but John Deere<\/a> took on major advancements in 1975 with the 200, 300 and 400 Series riding lawn mowers<\/a>. These models gave operators new and exciting features including engine options between 8-16 horsepower, integral headlights, and power steering.<\/p>\n

1980s: The History of John Deere Lawn Mowers<\/h3>\n

In 1984, John Deere<\/a> introduced the first tractor to combine a diesel engine with hydrostatic drive and power steering. \u00a0The 430 featured a powerful Yanmar 3-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine and weighed 1,170 lbs, making it the heaviest and strongest John Deere mower of its time.<\/p>\n

During the 1980s, the 300 Series was redesigned and many new features were added. \u00a0During this time, John Deere<\/a> hit a milestone because they manufactured their millionth lawn and garden tractor. They also introduced the R Series and S Series, a series designed for customers working with both small and large pieces of land.<\/p>\n

The R Series was a good fit for those handling smaller areas and included features like a 5-speed gear-drive transmission and tight turning radius of 27 inches. The S Series was perfect for those with bigger areas to cover. These mowers incorporated an electric start, 30-inch cutting width and 8 horsepower engines.<\/p>\n

1990s:\u00a0The History of John Deere Lawn Mowers<\/h3>\n

In the 1990s John Deere hit another milestone because they manufactured their 2 and 3 millionth tractor. The LT Series, LX Series, and GT and GX Series were vital to the history of John Deere lawn mowers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The LT Series<\/a> became one of the most popular John Deere mowers ever. This series provided operators with wider cuts and a greater amount of fuel. John Deere<\/a> placed more emphasis on comfort, designing an adjustable operator seat for those who spent long hours using their equipment.<\/p>\n

The LX Series<\/a> was known for its versatility, allowing owners to use a variety of attachments to handle a variety of projects around the yard. The GT and GX Series were perfect for individuals who needed more power and size to complete yard tasks. The GT and GX mowers <\/a>could hook up to other implements and a variety of rear attachments.<\/p>\n

2000s:\u00a0The History of John Deere Lawn Mowers<\/h3>\n

During the 2000s, some of the biggest product announcements made were the LA Series and the X Series. The LA Series models<\/a> catered to medium and large lawns and were designed with great features like the full-length steel welded frame, headlights, and Edge Cutting system. This series also incorporates John Deere\u2019s<\/a> trademarked CargO Mount system, which allows users to easily attach large baggers or other heavy rear-mounted equipment.<\/p>\n

What sets the X Series models<\/a> apart is the technology. These models transfer power to the wheels through the hydrostatic transmission to save time during operation and eliminate unnecessary gear-changing.<\/p>\n
