However, many have questions about the proper time and way to fertilize their lawn. Our experts have the answers so continue reading for tips for late summer and fall fertilizing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fertilizer helps your lawn stay healthy by adding nutrients to the soil, promoting new leaf and root growth, helping in recovery from foot traffic and pest damage, and reducing and controlling weeds. By September, your lawn has suffered from a long, hot summer. This is the perfect time to fertilize <\/a>your lawn. A little fertilizer will go a long way toward promoting grass growth before the fall.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to remember that the proper time to fertilize <\/a>depends on a variety of factors, most importantly the type of grass you have on your lawn and the weather conditions you\u2019re experiencing. Different types of grass should be fertilized <\/a>differently.<\/p>\n

For warm-season grasses, you should feed your grass a generous amount of fertilizer <\/a>during late summer. For instance, if you have Bermuda grass or St. Augustine grass, late August and early September are ideal periods for a generous feeding.<\/p>\n

However, if your lawn is occupied by cool-season grasses like bluegrass or fescue, it\u2019s best to wait until late fall before giving your grass a generous feeding<\/a>. In October or November use a phosphorous-based fertilizer. This will get your grass green and healthy before the winter arrives and helps strengthen and protect it for a better lawn next spring.<\/p>\n

Now that you know the proper time to fertilize <\/a>your lawn, here are some tips on how to properly fertilize grass. It\u2019s recommended to begin fertilizing <\/a>during late summer and fall because it is no longer hot. Never fertilize if you are still experiencing a period of drought. Your grass should receive water before it gets fertilized<\/a>. Additionally, you should water your grass after you apply fertilizer.<\/p>\n

Fertilize the edges of your lawn, and walk at a normal pace when applying fertilizer<\/a> to ensure even distribution. Avoid over fertilizing. Feeding <\/a>your lawn too much fertilizer causes grass to grow too quickly and makes it more likely that your lawn will develop disease.<\/p>\n

Lastly, consider investing in a spreader <\/a>to help evenly distribute fertilizer to your lawn.<\/p>\n

Remember fertilizing is one of the most important things you can do to promote growth and prepare your lawn for winter.<\/p>\n
