Michigan\u2019s cold and record rainfall this\u00a0spring will most likely cause an increase in mosquitos this summer. As temperatures warm up, lingering pools of water are perfect nesting spots for mosquito eggs to hatch. The best nesting spots include: ditches, ponds, flooded fields, and\u00a0containers filled with standing water. Some predict\u00a0that by mid-June, there will be a rare overlap of spring and summer mosquito hatchings, resulting in a 50\u00a0percent\u00a0increase of mosquitoes.\u00a0Some counties have brought out their summer mosquito control crews a few weeks early to start controlling the spring larvae in known breading spots.<\/p>\n

What can you do? There are many products on the market that claim to eliminate mosquitoes, but the most effective way to reduce mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding spots. Now is the perfect time to inspect your yard for any standing water. Pay close attention to buckets, flower pots, bird baths, clogged rain gutters, and old tires. By emptying standing water, you’ll reduce the mosquito breeding ground in your yard and save yourself from itching and scratching later on.<\/p>\n
